I am now reading NOrth Toward Home by Willie Morris. I have never been a fan of Mr. Morris but this book has certainly held my attention. He has a marvalous way with words and expressing his thoughts, most of which are are rather critical of the time he grew up in. But the main criticism he has put in print is of the state of Texas. I would be interested to know how the press described him during this period when he was in college there and then later as a journalist in the state. I am about half through the book so I must hold my judgement until I have completed it.

The name of the book I chose is Waltzing at the Piggly Wiggly by Robert Dalby. It takes place in a small Delta town and that over used term, Delta town that is, lets you know right off what the sense of the location will be. Frankly, the only word that I could think to describe it is inane. I will not finish the book. You can pretty well tell what will happen. The main character is a widow who wants to help the local grocery merchant maintain his business when a store similar to WalMart is ruining his business. The widow inlists the help of a well known widower who is known for his dancing ability to promise to dance with all the widows known as the Nitwits when they come to shop at the Piggly Wiggly. How is that for a plot? I pass on this one.
